Spend a full day of improv with two extraordinary teachers: Susan Messing and John Lehr. In this 5-hour intensive, Susan and John each take over for 2.5 hours, bringing their very different perspectives together around one central question: How can we stop trying to manufacture good improv and start actually playing what is happening right in front of us? Susan Messing – What Connects Us There is no worse feeling than having everyone before a show saying “got your back” only to feel alone in a group of people. Instead of hoping for some magical “group mind,” Susan gives you immediate tools to connect with the people around you. Listen with your whole body, react honestly, take care of each other and become an active part of what is already happening. Less waiting. Less thinking. More connection, commitment and play. John Lehr – Story Structures Story doesn’t have to mean planning ahead. John’s Story Structures lets you discover a world by jumping into it and playing. Instead of worrying about where the scene or story is supposed to go, you’ll explore simple structures that give improvisers a sandbox in which characters, relationships and stories can emerge naturally. Create the world. Follow what matters. Play, play, play. One day. Two teachers. Five hours of improv. The workshop connects Susan’s radical commitment to truth, presence and your fellow players with John’s playful approach to discovering worlds and stories through action. Expect a highly practical day with lots of stage time, immediate feedback and tools you can take directly into your next rehearsal or show. All levels welcome. Previous experience with Susan or John is not required.
